Subtle disruption. Gentle distortion. De ning a man through what he wears and how he wears it. Gentleman. Or rather: gentle, man.
Charm as a distinctive sign. Spontaneity that ignores the rules, without struggle.
Observing classicality through the lens of visceral expression, profound essence is captured and altered, as in a painting by Francis Bacon. With a glitch.
Casentino fabric, checkered wools, leather, patent leather: the alphabet. Ratifying outerwear, the small pullover, the shirt with plastrons: the vocabulary. The slim bowtie, the technical sneakers, the cap: the punctuation. Free and personal compositions.
Decisive gestures misalign familiar shapes. Unbalanced volumes. Details out of place. Acrylic and graceless colors. Jamie Reid’s slogans and punk lettering within Couture intarsia. The absolute synthesis maintains truth and authenticity, without reverences.
Gentle individuality that sprouts from the not thinking exceedingly to what one wears. Instinctively.

A new beginning demands a certain forgetfulness. In order to rewrite history one should forget about it and retain the essence, moving quickly and irreverently to explore the pleasures of metamorphosis.
Actions should be quick, guided by taste that edits, chooses, combines, unites: elongating, narrowing, keeping time as a value on the surface of things; stripping away of the super uous to add intensity.
Eras should be crossed in an accelerated supercut, drawing an imaginary line that brings Hieronymus Bosch, the visionary inventor of fantastic heavens and hells, close to Zandra Rhodes, who has been invited to reinterpret the artist’s imagery with her pure and innocent lines.
By becoming forgetful, signs of a subversive and individual grace can be found dispersed in history: The Garden of Earthly Delights, the miniatures of the Middle Ages and the colors of the Renaissance, the Musician’s Hell and Paradise Lost.
Values evolve.
Punk: a way of thinking that accepts and accentuates contrasts and imperfections instead of erasing them. The graceful poetry of color, even when it becomes acid and pungent. The quest for the precious, without the preciousness.
The end of the journey coincides with the start. It is women, represented in the plural: as individuals, not characters.
A punk idea of humanism.

A return to the beginning of time, in order to create a change in perspective: a pursuit of an essence that generates everything and is necessary today more than ever. Following the thread of an emotional story embedded in the vital magma of contemporary culture, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli accomplish a new stage of a very personal narrative journey for the Valentino Spring/Summer 2016 collection.
Looking towards a place both real and stylized they leave Rome, the center and horizon of their own aesthetic universe, behind them, and always preserving their invaluable expertise of métissage and savoir-faire, they land in wild, tribal Africa. The journey is introspective: emotions and spirituality, sensuality and human touch are the key to the persistent research of beauty as an expression of virtue.
The values of the Maison have always been re nement, individuality and timeless elegance and are reread from a new angle. The collection expresses totemic and primordial grace. At the center of this story is a powerful and persistent gure with an incisive, vertical silhouette. Cuts are reduced to a minimum, as if the garments were created by spontaneous and immediate gestures.
The urge of embellishment is an expression of presence: long tunics are held at the neck by necklaces and ornaments, while prints are concentrated on long dresses with a simple ancestral taste. The body is the protagonist being both vibrant and hieratic beneath scratched leather bustier worn with pencil skirts. Draped fabric generate unique pieces conveying regal grace.
The mask, traditionally used as a form of disguise is readapted as an expression of a symbolic ego and full of pathos, is a recurring motif that appears in multiple patterns on bags, shoes and jewelry. Wood and metal ornaments accent the image, signs of an austere and palpable opulence.
A collaboration with the artist Alessandro Gaggio has led to the creation of several high jewelry pieces in white terracotta with motifs that merge nature and human artistry. Natural and substantial shades make up the color palette: notes of black, ivory, ebony, beige, dark red and forest green maintain the inspiration of the collection close to the earth. Africa as vibrant, as throbbing, as imperfect purity.
These elements, that at the beginning of the 20th century have compelled many exponents of historical avant-garde movements to nourish from this same energy, return today as a compulsory necessity. The analogical, hand-made approach is the antidote to the digital deprivation of individual character in order to maintain authentic individuality.

Love: pure, burning, angelic, exhilarating. Love: all-consuming passion, an experience that elevates humans to paradisiacal ecstasy, transfigures the moment, and compels one to make supreme gestures.
Love: a fragile secret to be treasured and nurtured, the only power able to destroy controversy and adversity. For Valentino Haute Couture Spring Summer 2015, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli are inspired by this absolute sentiment, taking a journey through time that subtly and intricately weaves together Dolce Stil Novo and symbolism, pop music and Dantesque images, classic legends and contemporary poetry.
The linking thread and ideal setting is the extraordinary biography of Marc Chagall, the artist of Russian origin who later became a French citizen. His incredible biography is a celebration of the power of love, which preserved his pure, childlike vision even as an adult, despite difficult experiences in life.
The path is ineffable: the complexity of pathos is expressed through celestial, primeval iconography. The woman is an angel who, as in Stil Novo poetry, leads one to salvation through passion.
The impalpable elongated silhouette has an empire waist and is made of light, pure materials covered with embellishments such as verses, cryptograms, motifs, and amorous designs. Private sentiments emerge, but are opulently revealed only up close.
Exploring the specificity of Couture in its true essence, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli conceive each creation as a unicum, an expression of the infinite nuances of the sentiment that inspires their work.
Natural linens, gauze, muslin, and velvet are superimposed in tactile poems on layered dresses. Corsets worn as outerwear or incorporated in the structure of the dress hug the breasts and protect the heart. Long embroidered vests are worn over light dresses. Bustier tops form wing-like elements.
The metallic knit dress is movingly tender, while the embroidery on the linen coat has a vibrant nature. Long velvet dresses and muslin blouses portray figures ready to take flight. Pure, almost elementary colors, capture the sensational power of emotion: neutral shades of ecru ivory and off-white are accented with blue, red and light blue.
This celebration of love focuses on its protagonist: the woman, a sublime creature who triggers this process of elevation. The message is harmonious and leads to salvation because mankind can embrace the true meaning of life only through a rediscovery of love.

Progressive aesthetics. Personalities sharing a vision. Imagining the new Valentino collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli were inspired by moments of non-conformist artistic movements, presenting a contemporary synthesis of seminal experiences.
The point of departure is the Ballets Russes, an experiment of total creativity during the 1920s in which Djagilev worked with the most famous artists of the time, from Picasso to Bakst, moving from naturalism to mysterious simultaneous geometry.
The modernist urgency and the radicalism of the color field in the Sixties were, through Futurism and Cubism, an ideal consequence that is showcased in today’s geometric motifs of Australian artist Esther Stewart, with whom the Creative Directors have collaborated, translating her works from the surface, within the structure and construction of the clothes.
The idea is to create a community around the Maison with the knowledge that dialog and crossover produce spores of progress. The symbolic connecting thread, is the savoir-faire of Couture, core value and distinctive trait of Valentino.
The silhouette is sharp and sleek. Essential garments of the male wardrobe have undergone a meticulous transformation, blending embellishment and practicality: oversized PVC zippers close long straight coats, while pockets in a contrasting shade work as color blocks.
Esther Stewart’s compositions trigger a sequence of micro and macro geometric patterns transformed into patchwork, prints and intarsia: in double cashmere for Couture coats and through the textures of Shetland wool sweaters. Camouflage also becomes intarsia. Slim-fit jackets have a high button stance.
Cigarette trousers are worn with sturdy lace-up shoes or nude-colored sneakers with bands in a contrasting shade. The search for aesthetics and function creates a system of graphic patterns on slim-fit parkas, capes and blouson jackets embellished with stripes and geometric motifs.
Heat-bonded flowers decorate lapels on herringbone print blazers and coats. The savoir-faire of Haute Couture, in a masculine version, penetrates everything, producing shifts and changes: the aesthetics of precision typical of the Valentino man become vibrant with an energetic and dynamic aplomb.
Completing the concept, the color palette features idiosyncratic combinations and contrasts: blue, gray, green, red, light blue, pale yellow and burgundy blend in an effortless style that includes and accentuates an offbeat touch.
