FADE IN: CINECITTÁ STUDIOS – SOUND STAGE 10
The ruins of Caracalla baths comme discotheque as imagined from Fellini’s La Dolce Vita set the scene for the Moschino Womens Prefall and Mens Fall collection. Harringbone tweed coats embroidered with Latin lettering resemble ancient chiseled tablets pierced with deep red and golden yellow satin sashes, ruffles and bows mixing staunch menswear staples with the elegance and drama of couture evening gowns.
Amongst the cast of characters, there are nods to Fellini archetypes found in a variety of films: Satyricon, 8 ½, Casanova, Roma and La Dolce Vita. Roman mythological creatures and Latin inscriptions are resurrected for a red and blue scarf print of regal proportions. Centurion armour re-approached and mixed with eveningwear for women and sportswear for men.
Opulent court gowns from Italian nobility are shortened, cropped, dissected into a bodice and separate cage skirt touching upon another note in the Fellini oeuvre. Tracksuits adorned with jewels and intricate tarnished metallic gold embroidery create embellished “bones;” showing ribcages and femurs.
Flourish and flair mix and mingle with deconstructed “off duty” showgirls fringed in tiered beading then juxtaposed against duffels and bombers; padded, quilted and remixed to add an unexpected drab military foil to all that glamour.
Are they extras between scenes running in their period costumes with their own parka layered for warmth? Are they doing double duty filming scenes in two different époques?
Exaggerating the frivolity and sensibility at the same time, it needs not make sense as it seeks not that. It only seeks to inspire and intrigue. It is surreal. It is cinema. It is Fellini. It is Moschino.

MOSCHINO CIRCUS
Ladies and Gentlemen! Boys and Girls! Children of all ages! Welcome to the most spectacular, most fascinating, most incredible… Mos[t]-chino Show! Trapeze artists, acrobats, popcorn, cotton candy, unicycles and clowns. Moschino’s Creative Director Jeremy Scott is reaching into the circus of today’s events and pulling a rabbit out of a hat – or rather, a tiger.
This season is Moschino’s answer to the current state of affairs. From peony-pink ruched tulle dresses with giant multi-colored daisy appliques, to harlequin Lurex brocade suits, silk georgette gowns with floral appliques outlined in tiny crystals, tiny round paillettes mirrors dotting a floor-length black gown.
The message is a cinematic bow to the accusations, the scandal, the “news” of today. Scott asks us to step into the Moschino house of mirrors with him as he breathes joy, levity and life into the uncertainty. However, this collection is acutely aware of the act from which it must distract. There is a darker side to the mirth and frivolity.
A literal dove-covered bodysuit is juxtaposed by gold cord soutache embroidery shaped in the outline of a skeleton is a key thematic element on tuxedo suits, tracksuits and jumpsuits. Blood-red beaded embroidery over a nude tulle gown creates a visually “slashed” and “torn” illusion beneath an operatic ruched tulle overcoat.
Carefully sewn metallic bugle beads hang from colorful polka dots on a white gown looking like an illusion of dripping paint, unfinished and abandoned. The message is clear – amidst the adversity, there is hope. This is communicated in the vibrant metallic trinkets stitched into quilted black tulle – just slightly obscured but dazzling in its own right.
A superhero bodysuit beneath a literal red satin cape, a lion tamer tuxedo in a beaded sequin leopard pattern – lean into the unknown, embrace it, become fearlessness itself. When society feels like a tightrope walker leaning in the wind, Scott is here to entertain astonish and impress. So step right up, admit one, run away with the circus and … let the show begin!

Stars from the Stars
This season at Moschino Jeremy Scott ventures deep into Area 51 territory to concoct a collection that puts conspiracy theory into fashion practice. What if extra-terrestrials really did walk among us? What if Marilyn Monroe really was knocked off by the feds to stop her spilling the beans about her Roswell pillow talk with JFK?? And – deep breath – wasn’t Jackie O too perfect to be human???
The parallel narratives of the paranoid are deployed by Scott to create a collection that’s so real it’s unreal. Our first contact comes via a series of out of this world dresses and separates that mix just so mid-century daywear with the cut and zippers of the iconic Moschino biker jacket.
The colors are pumped: Scott ventured beyond the realms of Pantone this season to discover powerful shades that have fallen into disuse. Some looks feature wide vertical stripes, others touches of leather, and yet other sports-touched looks come in a three colorway, cracked zig-zag brocade. A Moschino foulard print is twisted with polka-pixels. We see Venus in faux furs. Everything’s matchy-matchy. She’s fabulous – and she’s not from around here.
Further frazzle is delivered thanks to this season’s capsule collection, a collaboration with the awesome Australian artist Ben Frost. His hyper-stylised images of feminine ‘perfection’ collaged with the packaging of the products with which we self-medicate in this consumer age work perfectly on cute handbags, gamine dresses, to-die-for phone cases and more – buy ‘em now!
The daywear has landed – we orbit to night. We see a series of siren dresses and tuxedos that come slashed, chopped, hybridised and collided and mix metallics and sequins, crystals and silks. They combine goddess gathering from the first great age of Old Hollywood glamour with a hot-pink hello to Marilyn Monroe plus looks from a later, more empowered age – as if some new arrival had processed the humanity’s entire red-carpet history at hyperspeed then materialised the best of it all together.
These are looks fit for a star from the stars. Plan Nine from outer space. The Truth? It’s Out There! Believe.
